Candidates 2026: Vaishali’s Mistake Shakes Up the Title Race — Can She Steady Her Game?

India Faces Tough Day in Sports Against China

Sunday turned out to be a challenging day for India as they went up against China in various sports events. During the Badminton Asian Championships, Ayush Shetty faced world number two Shi Yu Qi and unfortunately lost in straight games.

In the chess arena, India’s struggles continued in the Candidates Tournament as Vaishali Rameshbabu, who had been leading the women’s section, faced a setback against Zhu Jiner, costing her a crucial opportunity. Divya Deshmukh, another Indian player, also experienced a loss against Tan Zhongyi, placing her at the bottom of the standings.

Vaishali’s defeat is particularly disappointing for many chess fans in India. With Praggnanandhaa’s chances now officially over and Javokhir Sindarov just a draw away from securing the Candidates title, hopes for a positive outcome from Cyprus are dwindling.

What Happened to Vaishali?

Going into the 12th round, Vaishali had only one loss in the entire tournament, which was against Zhu Jiner. She has often struggled against Chinese opponents known for their discipline and patience.

In her earlier encounter with Zhu, Vaishali attempted to counter the Italian Opening but made some mistakes that allowed Zhu to seize control of the game. In the crucial 12th round, she faced the Caro-Kann Defence, a challenging structure for White.

While trying to maintain an aggressive stance, a mistake on c5 cost her the upper hand. The situation worsened when she misplayed her rook and made other questionable moves, ultimately leading to her downfall.

The End of a Golden Opportunity?

After Bibisara Assaubayeva defeated Kateryna Lagno, the competition tightened, with only half a point separating her from Zhu and Vaishali. Vaishali did have some luck as Alexandra Goryachkina managed to draw with Anna Muzychuk, keeping her ahead, albeit narrowly.

As the final two rounds approach, Vaishali is set to play against Tan Zhongyi and Kateryna Lagno. Her track record against both looks promising, but Zhu will be facing a tough match against Muzychuk.

For Vaishali, the path forward is clear but difficult: she needs to secure wins in both games and hope Zhu falters. Even a draw in either match could jeopardize her chances unless Zhu also drops points.

With everything at stake, even a minor mistake could change the title race and the prospects for a spot in the World Championship. What started as a hopeful campaign for India now hangs in the balance.
