Governor Healey Highlights Massachusetts’ Defense Sector at Business Event

Governor Maura Healey shared her administration’s commitment to the defense sector in a sports-themed way during a recent New England Council breakfast in Boston’s Seaport. Using a quote from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, she emphasized the importance of anticipating future trends.

“Heads up, the defense industry is where we need to be,” Healey remarked, noting that modern conflicts often take place in the digital realm. She pointed out that many technologies developed for defense have applications in marine and climate technologies, showcasing the innovation present in Massachusetts.

At the event, Healey discussed the Massachusetts Strategic Hub for Innovation, Exchange and Leadership in Defense (SHIELD), an initiative that launched last October but has not received extensive coverage. The governor stated that this program demonstrates the state’s strong investment in the defense sector.

The defense industry significantly contributes to the state’s economy, accounting for $48 billion in GDP, which is about 7% of the total. Healey highlighted the connection between national security and economic growth, emphasizing the importance of the technology supply chain linked to defense.

“I want you to understand how we think as a team,” Healey told the business leaders present. Although Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley was absent due to business commitments, other Cabinet members including Labor Secretary Lauren Jones and Veterans Secretary Eric Goralnick were present.

Healey encouraged open communication with businesses, stating that her team is ready to address needs quickly. “It’s about being responsive and moving fast,” she said, acknowledging that while not every request will be fulfilled, the dialogue must be ongoing.

Looking ahead, the governor plans to introduce an economic development bill before the legislative session concludes in under four months. “Economic development is our priority. I aim to file a bill and find ways to attract more businesses every day,” Healey explained, making it clear that her efforts extend beyond just legislation.
