Indian Diaspora in Sweden Celebrates Cultural Heritage Through Dance

In Stockholm, a dedicated group of Indian expatriates is proudly showcasing their cultural heritage through classical dance. Led by Rohan Karn from Bhagalpur, this collective is part of the Nrityangan School of Dance (NSD). Their goal is to promote India’s rich art and history while fostering connections between people through cultural exchanges.

Rohan Karn, a software engineer who grew up in Bhagalpur, shared, "We aim to share the beauty of Indian dance and heritage with the world." The latest event organized by NSD featured a variety of dance performances, including traditional styles like Bharatnatyam, Kathak, and Rabindra Sangeet. The program began with a Saraswati Vandana, honoring India’s cultural traditions.

The event drew a lively crowd, including Leena Nayyar, the Attaché (Commerce) at the Indian Embassy in Sweden, along with embassy officials, families, and students. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as attendees enjoyed the vibrant presentations.

Rohan emphasized the importance of using dance to connect cultures and represent India on an international stage. “These performances help us stay rooted to our culture while enhancing India’s image abroad,” he noted.

NSD was founded by Ishita Mitra from West Bengal and includes a passionate team of members like Swagata Bhattacharya, Sangeeta Dutta, and others. Together, they are committed to celebrating Indian traditions and creating a platform for friendship and understanding.

One member remarked, “This group offers us a chance to share our art and culture while also connecting with each other. It’s especially meaningful for migrants and their children who want to learn about their heritage.”

Through their efforts, this group is building a cultural bridge that links India and Sweden, enriching the identity of the diaspora and promoting appreciation for India’s artistic legacy around the globe.
