India’s PVR Inox Sets Sights on Indie Film Distribution Through MAMI Independent

PVR Inox Launches Weekly Screening Series to Promote Independent Cinema

PVR Inox Pictures, part of India’s top multiplex chain, is introducing a new weekly screening series aimed at uncovering unique films for national distribution. This initiative, launched on February 25, in collaboration with the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), takes place every Wednesday at PVR Lido in Mumbai and has already attracted a decent audience.

Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Inox Pictures, emphasized that this program goes beyond just a weekly event. The company has a history of bringing independent films from around the world to Indian audiences. Gianchandani stated, “Once we identify great films through this series, PVR Inox Pictures will ensure they reach audiences all over the country.”

This initiative comes in response to the concerns of independent filmmakers in India facing challenges in getting their films shown in multiplexes. Gianchandani believes that the real challenge lies in finding films that resonate with viewers rather than just securing screen time. He said, “It’s not about the slots anymore; it’s about connecting with the audience.”

For Gianchandani, this series is also about building an audience over time. He explained, “By nurturing such initiatives, we hope to spark interest among viewers so they will return for more films when they get a theatrical release.”

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, a filmmaker and head of the Film Heritage Foundation, is a key figure behind MAMI Independent. He shares that the goal is to enhance regional cinema and empower filmmakers by creating a distribution network where they can showcase their own films. Dungarpur highlights that previous outlets for independent cinema lacked accessibility for the general public.

He also points out that MAMI Independent is part of a larger rebranding effort for the organization, with a focus on representing diverse voices from across India. Dungarpur mentioned, “This initiative will reveal the true heart of Indian cinema, featuring films from various regions and discovering new talents.”

The lineup for April 2026 reflects this mission, showcasing features and short films in multiple languages, from Ladakhi to Malayalam. Selected titles include award-winning films like “Nocturnes” and “The Elysian Field.” Plans for future months include international films from Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Both Gianchandani and Dungarpur aim to expand this weekly series to other cities and smaller towns in India. They see the recent growth of multiplex screens—now over 10,000—as a significant opportunity to finally give independent cinema the visibility it deserves.
