Repeating Meals Could Be the Secret to Shedding Pounds, Research Reveals

Simple Eating Can Aid Weight Loss, Study Finds

A new study suggests that losing weight may be easier than many think, highlighting the importance of sticking to familiar meals. Research published in the journal Health Psychology indicates that individuals who consumed the same meals more frequently lost more weight during a 12-week weight loss program.

Lead researcher Charlotte Hagerman from the Oregon Research Institute explained that maintaining a healthy diet requires ongoing effort and self-control. “Establishing eating routines might lighten this burden and make healthier choices seem more natural,” she noted.

The study involved 112 adults who were either overweight or obese. Participants kept track of their meals using a mobile app and weighed themselves daily. Researchers measured how “routinized” the participants’ eating was by examining how much their calorie intake varied and how often they repeated the same foods.

The results showed that those who stuck to more repetitive meal patterns lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, compared to 4.3% for those with more varied diets, according to a report from the American Psychological Association. Additionally, participants who maintained consistent calorie intake also saw greater weight loss.

Liza Baker, a nutrition expert and founder of Simply: Health Coaching, pointed out that these findings resonate with her experience over the years working with clients. “Lessening the mental effort of deciding ‘What should I eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner?’ can make it easier to stay on the path to wellness,” Baker shared.

She emphasized that people don’t have to repeat every meal to see benefits. Starting with one repetitive meal, like breakfast or lunch, can be a great way to begin.

However, experts caution that these findings show only an association and do not imply cause and effect. The observational nature of the study means that while routine eating appears to relate to weight loss, it’s not confirmed that it directly causes better weight outcomes.

Baker also warned about the potential downsides of repeating meals—especially if they’re not balanced nutritionally or if they lead to perfectionist tendencies. “Without a solid understanding of nutrition, sticking to a repeat meal plan could cause nutrient deficiencies,” she cautioned.

Overall, while the study uncovers interesting insights about the power of routine in dieting, more research is necessary to fully understand how repetition in meal planning may serve as an effective weight-loss strategy.
