Rishabh Pant Discusses Future Role with Lucknow Super Giants After Tough IPL Opener
Rishabh Pant is ready to continue contributing to the top order for Lucknow Super Giants, even after a challenging start in their IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals. Opening alongside Mitchell Marsh, Pant showed promise but was unexpectedly run out after a straight drive hit Mukesh Kumar’s hand and deflected onto the stumps, leaving him with just seven runs from nine deliveries.
After the match, Pant shared his thoughts on the incident, stressing that fixating on such moments can be detrimental to the team’s morale. “The best way to recover is to forget about it. You can’t control these things, and dwelling on them doesn’t help,” he said.
Pant Maintains Top Order Position
While Pant did not confirm if he would continue as the opener, he assured fans that he would be part of the top order. “It’s a bit of a toss-up, but you’ll definitely see me in the top order,” he mentioned. He explained the reasoning behind their batting order changes. Nicholas Pooran, who was moved to the middle order, is expected to stabilize the innings, allowing LSG to maintain a left-right batting combination at the start.
“The plan was straightforward. Pooran is managing the middle overs, and I’m batting higher up. We wanted to mix left and right-handers to prevent early left-arm spin,” Pant detailed. He also mentioned Ayush Badoni’s promotion in the order, particularly helpful for situations where early wickets fall.
Tough Match for LSG
Despite LSG’s new strategy, the results were not favorable as they were bowled out for 141 runs in just 18.4 overs. Abdul Samad top-scored with 36 runs, while Marsh added 35, but the team struggled to form solid partnerships. Pant reflected that scoring only 140 runs on a good pitch isn’t enough to put pressure on the opposition.
Delhi Capitals comfortably chased the target, reaching 145 for 4 in just 17.1 overs. Sameer Rizvi played a stellar innings, finishing with 70 runs not out, and Tristan Stubbs supported well with 39 runs.
Despite the defeat, Pant found silver linings in the bowling performance and the determination shown by his team. However, he acknowledged that giving away extras and missing crucial moments cost them dearly. Moving forward, the Lucknow Super Giants will be focused on finding the right balance in their batting lineup, with Pant’s role likely remaining a hot topic in the matches to come.
