Meta Transforms Workforce into ‘AI Creators,’ Restructures Teams into Agile Pods Amid Reality Labs Job Cuts: Report

Meta Introduces New “AI Builders” Roles in Restructuring Effort

Meta is making changes to its workforce by introducing new titles for employees, designating them as “AI builders.” This shift is part of a strategy to create smaller, focused teams, according to a recent report from Business Insider that references a memo within the company.

The reorganization is currently being tested on a team of 1,000 workers in Meta’s Reality Labs division, which is tasked with developing tools for creators. This initiative reflects Meta’s broader goal of enhancing efficiency and embracing the use of artificial intelligence in its operations.

Details of the New Structure

In the memo, it was shared that all team members in Reality Labs will now hold one of three new titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead. Many employees have begun updating their LinkedIn profiles to include the new “AI builder” title.

The memo emphasized that the company aims to significantly improve engineering productivity and the quality of its products. “To achieve this, we’re changing how we work and how we support each other,” it stated.

Under this new structure, the AI-native pods will contain small groups of AI builders focusing on specific goals rather than sticking to traditional job roles. This means that roles could shift; for example, an engineer might also take on design responsibilities as needed.

Leadership and Management Changes

Each pod will be managed by a Pod Lead, overseeing daily tasks, while Org Leads will handle performance evaluations and promotions, assisted by undisclosed “AI systems.” The overall size of the teams is expected to remain constant, despite the changes.

However, the restructuring has also resulted in job losses. Recently, Meta laid off hundreds of employees, impacting various teams, including those in Reality Labs. Some staff members have been advised to work remotely as the company prepares for these changes.

A Meta spokesperson addressed the situation, stating, “Teams across Meta regularly restructure or make adjustments to better achieve their goals.” They also mentioned efforts to find new roles for affected employees where feasible.

The Reality Labs division has faced significant layoffs in the past, including over 1,000 cuts in January. This division is known for its work on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.
