Sabalenka Surprised as Miami Open Match Cancellation Considered
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka expressed her shock when organizers of the Miami Open contemplated canceling her match against American player Ann Li. The decision came about due to rain interruptions, which affected the schedule for a highly anticipated night match between Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca.
Instead of being moved to the main stadium later, which she found unexpected, Sabalenka’s match was shifted to a less prominent court. As the top-ranked player and defending champion, she was taken aback by the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Sabalenka said, “I was actually shocked that they were even considering canceling my match. They presented a few options for the stadiums, and I was wondering why Alcaraz and Fonseca couldn’t start later.” She noted the night session had typically begun later, adding to her surprise.
Recently victorious at the Indian Wells Masters, Sabalenka ultimately opted to play her match on Friday, allowing herself a day off to prepare for her next challenge. “I chose to play today so I could have a day off to recharge if I win. Honestly, I was surprised, but I’m happy they offered me options,” she remarked.
