Airwallex Boosts Global Expansion with Major Investment

As businesses worldwide seek growth beyond their borders, handling payments in various countries and currencies has become a tricky affair. To address this challenge, companies need dependable financial systems that streamline international transactions.

In light of this rising need, fintech companies are stepping up their investments in global infrastructure. One notable player, Airwallex, has recently declared a substantial investment of $1.135 billion over the next five years, aimed at bolstering its presence in the UK and across the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) regions.

This investment will fuel Airwallex’s strategy to expand its offerings and enhance its market reach. The company also plans to create around 100 senior engineering positions in the UK to boost its technological capabilities, better supporting businesses that depend on digital tools for managing global payments.

The push comes as the demand for cross-border financial services increases. Airwallex has noted remarkable growth in the EMEA region, with its revenue surging by 116% year-over-year and transaction volumes skyrocketing by 226% in the last quarter.

Currently, Airwallex possesses over 80 financial licenses around the globe, covering North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. The company serves more than 200,000 businesses and operates from 26 offices worldwide.

This latest investment builds upon Airwallex’s previous commitments, including a $590 million investment announced in December for its UK operations, with plans to enter new European markets such as the Netherlands, France, and Germany.

Airwallex’s growth strategy follows its recent Series G funding round, which brought in $330 million and increased its valuation to $8 billion, up from $6.2 billion in the previous Series F round. The fintech company has also been expanding globally, with a second headquarters now established in San Francisco, in addition to its main base in Singapore.

Founders and Vision

Founded in Melbourne in 2015 by Xijing Dai, Jack Zhang, Lucy Liu, and Max Li, Airwallex emerged from the founders’ experience witnessing small online businesses struggle with slow and costly international money transfers.

This frustration inspired the creation of Airwallex, with the goal of building a platform that is fast, borderless, and intelligent, just like the businesses it serves. From its beginnings helping companies transfer money across borders, Airwallex has evolved into a comprehensive financial infrastructure provider, offering services in payments, treasury, billing, and spend management across over 200 markets.

Airwallex’s innovative infrastructure bypasses traditional banking methods. Instead of depending on multiple intermediaries, it connects directly to local payment systems worldwide, allowing for swift and affordable transactions while ensuring compliance and multi-currency support.

With regulatory licenses in more than 80 jurisdictions, Airwallex enjoys a unique global reach, giving it a significant advantage over competitors.

The company is also focused on developing AI-powered agents to automate complex financial tasks, such as organizing expenses and managing treasury operations.

What sets Airwallex apart from others like Wise, Revolut, Stripe, and Payoneer is its deep infrastructure and enterprise-centric approach. It offers APIs and embedded tools that seamlessly integrate into the financial operations of global businesses.
