Suryakumar Yadav Expresses Relief After Tense Victory Against England in T20 World Cup Semifinal
In an intense semifinal match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 held on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India emerged victorious against England by just seven runs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted to feeling quite nervous throughout the game, especially during England’s chase.
India set a formidable target, scoring 253 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, which is the highest total ever in T20 World Cup knockout matches. Sanju Samson led the charge with an impressive knock of 89 runs off just 42 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes.
England put up a valiant effort, coming close to the target with a commendable score of 246 runs for 7 wickets. Jacob Bethell was the standout performer for England, scoring 105 runs off 48 deliveries, also featuring eight fours and seven sixes.
After the match, Suryakumar shared a light moment he had with English player Harry Brook during the tense moments, asking, “How many more do we need to score against you guys?” Reflecting on the match, he praised England’s batting, acknowledging they were always in the game. However, he was thankful for his bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, for managing to pull the match back in India’s favor.
Suryakumar described his heart racing throughout the second innings, humorously estimating that his heart rate could have reached up to 175 beats per minute. “It was a wonderful match and a wonderful semifinal. All that is behind us now, and we are very happy to go into the final,” he said.
India’s comeback was crucial, especially after a strong partnership between Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, who scored 35 runs from 20 balls for the fifth wicket. A spectacular catch by Axar Patel on the boundary in the 14th over shifted momentum back to India, leading them to a cherished victory.
The Men in Blue are now set to face New Zealand in the final, scheduled for March 8 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
