Sri Lanka Coach Sanath Jayasuriya Weighs Future After Disappointing T20 World Cup
Sanath Jayasuriya, the head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team, has hinted at the possibility of stepping down following the team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 held at home. Though he isn’t making any immediate decisions, he remains open to the idea if Sri Lanka Cricket can find a suitable replacement.
Following a tense match where Sri Lanka lost to Pakistan by just five runs, Jayasuriya reflected on his time as coach. He acknowledged the team’s progress but expressed regret over the World Cup exit, highlighting that discussions about his future with Sri Lanka Cricket are still ongoing. His current contract runs until June 2026, but with an upcoming tour to Afghanistan in March, the board may prefer to maintain stability for the time being.
At the post-match press conference, Jayasuriya spoke candidly, saying, “I believe it might be time to hand over the reins to someone else. I mentioned a couple of months ago during the England series that I didn’t plan to stay here long.”
The T20 World Cup did not go as hoped for Sri Lanka, which stumbled from the onset. They managed to progress from the group stage even after a surprising defeat to Zimbabwe, but their hopes quickly faded in the Super 8 phase. Consecutive losses to England, New Zealand, and Pakistan dashed their semifinal aspirations, with the defeat to Pakistan being particularly tough as they fell just five runs short while chasing 213 runs, despite a remarkable 76 not out from captain Dasun Shanaka.
This early exit marks a troubling trend for the 2014 champions, missing the semifinals in five consecutive T20 World Cups.
Jayasuriya took charge of the Sri Lankan team in mid-2024, initially as interim coach before becoming the permanent head coach later that year. His leadership included some significant achievements, such as Sri Lanka’s first ODI series win against India in 27 years in August 2024 and a memorable Test victory at The Oval. However, consistency in T20 cricket has been a struggle, with the team facing challenges in both the Asia Cup and a tri-series in Pakistan prior to the World Cup.
During his tenure, Sri Lanka played 76 matches across all formats, securing 34 victories, which showed steady growth despite the recent troubles in T20.
As Sri Lanka Cricket explores options for potential foreign candidates for the coaching role, Jayasuriya remains in contemplation about the future after a campaign that concluded sooner than expected.
