Rakesh Roshan Opens Up About Distributors Dropping “Karan Arjun” After Ajay Devgn’s Exit: “They Questioned Casting Romantic Heroes in an Action Flick”

As the classic film Karan Arjun makes a return to theaters, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has fondly reminisced about the making of this 1995 hit. The film, which featured Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan as brothers, left a lasting impact through its memorable scenes, dialogues, and music.

In a recent discussion, Rakesh shared that the film could have looked quite different at first. The original plan was to cast Ajay Devgn alongside Shah Rukh Khan, but that eventually evolved into bringing in Salman Khan and Aamir Khan instead.

Rakesh Roshan recounted how Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan initially expressed a desire to swap their roles. The director reflected on their discussion, explaining his reasoning for keeping the original casting intact. “I asked them what benefit there would be in switching roles. It made them think, as I emphasized that if the film doesn’t succeed, then it won’t matter. I assured them I would make it work by incorporating both action and romance according to their images,” he said.

Eventually, after some back-and-forth, he decided to approach Salman and Aamir Khan for the project. Rakesh recalled how Shah Rukh was very eager to be part of the film, mentioning, “You gave me my break; I would lose sleep if I didn’t take this opportunity."

The director also faced challenges with distributors who were hesitant after the casting changes. They questioned why he would cast actors known for romantic roles in an action film. Roshan defended his choices, noting that both Salman and Shah Rukh were physically fit and capable of handling action.

For context, prior to Karan Arjun, Salman Khan had starred in romantic comedies like Ek Ladka Ek Ladki and Hum Aapke Hain Koun…?, while Shah Rukh was known for his roles in romantic dramas such as Darr and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

Karan Arjun not only featured these stars but also included a strong supporting cast, including Rakhee and Amrish Puri, with Kajol and Mamta Kulkarni playing key roles.

Rakesh Roshan’s reflections shine a light on the behind-the-scenes decisions that contributed to the film’s iconic status over the years.
