BBC to Cut Up to 2,000 Jobs Amid Financial Challenges
LONDON: The BBC announced on Wednesday that it plans to reduce its workforce by as many as 2,000 positions due to tough conditions in the media industry.
Rhodri Talfan Davies, the interim director-general, informed staff that the expected job losses would range between 1,800 and 2,000. This workforce reduction represents nearly 10% of the BBC’s total staff, which numbers around 21,500.
In a message shared with employees, Talfan Davies explained that the BBC is dealing with “significant financial pressures” that need urgent attention. “Simply put, the difference between our expenses and our revenue is widening,” he stated.
He added that these changes are necessary and follow a recent meeting with all staff, highlighting the challenges the organization is currently facing.
