Mother Discovers Cancer After Painful Reaction to Alcohol

In a surprising turn of events, a U.K. mother named Hollie Thursby, 28, encountered serious health issues linked to her occasional use of alcohol. After the birth of her second son, Jack, she started noticing strange symptoms which prompted her to seek medical advice.

At a routine check-up for Jack when he was just a few months old, Hollie reported experiencing “unbearably itchy skin,” a common post-partum condition. Initially, her doctor attributed this to hormonal changes, which seemed reasonable given her recent childbirth.

Hollie enjoyed a glass of wine every now and then but was troubled by severe pain on the side of her neck, stating it was “really quite painful and uncomfortable.” Along with this pain, she felt unusually tired, attributing it to her busy routine as a mother caring for her children.

In July 2025, during a self-check, she discovered a noticeable lump on her neck. Describing it as “really quite big,” she noted that while it was hard and immovable, it was not painful. “You could see it when I turned my neck to the side,” she explained.

After medical examinations, Hollie received a diagnosis of Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer affecting two or more lymph nodes. Among the many symptoms of this illness are swollen lymph nodes, overwhelming fatigue, night sweats, weight loss, and discomfort when consuming alcohol, especially wine.

Hollie learned that experiencing pain after drinking alcohol is a known side effect of Hodgkin lymphoma, tied to the acidity in wine, which doesn’t affect other types of alcoholic beverages. This type of pain is recognized, but cases where it occurs are considered rare.

Currently undergoing chemotherapy, Hollie has expressed concern about her ability to care for her children, especially after having lost her own mother to a blood disorder. “I can’t do that to the boys,” she shared, emphasizing her determination to fight the illness for her family. She is focused on her treatment plan and remains hopeful, believing this challenging time will pass.

Anyone who experiences unusual pain or symptoms after drinking alcohol is encouraged to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and support.
