Djokovic Avoids Controversy with Close Call During Australian Open

Novak Djokovic faced a tense moment during his third-round match at the Australian Open against Botic van de Zandschulp, but he managed to avoid any serious consequences. Late in the second set at the Rod Laver Arena, Djokovic hit a ball in frustration, sending it flying near a ball girl positioned by the net. Fortunately, the ball narrowly missed her, allowing the match to continue without any interruptions.

Had the ball made contact, Djokovic could have been automatically disqualified according to the Grand Slam rules, which prohibit reckless play. However, chair umpire John Blom chose not to issue a warning, sparking discussions due to Djokovic’s past issues with discipline.

This incident drew comparisons to a situation during the 2020 US Open when Djokovic was defaulted for accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball in anger. Despite that, Djokovic quickly composed himself and went on to win the match with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). This victory made him the first player to reach 400 Grand Slam match wins and he now looks forward to facing the winner of the match between Jakub Mensik and Ethan Quinn.

Djokovic’s Strong Performance at the Tournament

Throughout the Australian Open, Djokovic has shown impressive skill and determination. He started his journey with a commanding victory over Spain’s Pedro Martínez, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2—marking his 100th win at the Australian Open and making him the first man in the Open Era to achieve 100 or more wins at three Grand Slam events, including Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

He then easily defeated Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli with the same score before his recent match against van de Zandschulp. The 10-time champion has maintained a focused and strong gameplay, positioning himself as a leading contender for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.
