Shield Space Secures £2 Million to Enhance Satellite Protection
Lincoln, UK – Shield Space, an emerging player in the UK’s defense technology sector, has successfully raised £2 million in funding. This investment will help the company advance its mission to protect satellites from threats such as jamming, interference, and direct attacks. The funding round was led by the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II via Mercia Ventures, including contributions from Twin Path Ventures, ROI Ventures, and P3A Ventures.
With the new funding, Shield Space aims to move to larger facilities in Lincoln, recruit five additional specialists, and conduct its first test flight by early 2027. This is an important step in testing autonomous protection systems for both military and commercial fleets.
Growing Threats in Space Require Swift Action
Although space might seem tranquil from afar, it has turned into a tightly packed and increasingly dangerous area. The number of satellite jamming incidents is rising each year, disrupting vital services and highlighting the vulnerabilities of global infrastructure. The risk of physical attacks from hostile entities on satellites also poses a serious concern.
According to UK Space Command, there are currently about 220 counterspace systems in orbit that can potentially damage or destroy satellites. Additionally, the issue of space debris adds to the dangers, creating unpredictable obstacles that can damage crucial assets in mere moments.
Despite these escalating threats, many satellite defense systems still rely heavily on ground teams. If a satellite faces a threat, operators must detect it, plan a response, and then send maneuver commands. This delay can mean the difference between survival and destruction. Shield Space is developing technology aimed at completely removing that lag.
Autonomous Systems for Real-Time Safety
Shield Space is working on autonomous guidance systems that will enable satellites to recognize and evade threats immediately. Rather than waiting for commands from Earth, these spacecraft will be equipped to assess risks and take action on their own.
This innovation could revolutionize satellite security. With automated responses, satellites can escape danger—whether from jamming, hostile actions, or drifting debris—before ground teams even notice the problem. The goal is to provide allied nations and commercial operators with a robust network of self-defending spacecraft capable of withstanding growing competition in space.
Innovative Founders with Unique Backgrounds
The strength of Shield Space lies in its unique foundation led by “soldier-scientists.” The company was established in 2025 by Graeme Ritchie and Dan Molland, who previously collaborated at UK Space Command, combining their operational defense experience with technical expertise.
Ritchie, the CEO, has a background as an RAF defense technology specialist, having deployed advanced systems in real-life situations. He also founded Shield UAS Solutions, a consultancy focused on drone technologies. Molland, serving as the CTO, has experience with launch integration, contributing to payloads for SpaceX and NASA missions. This combined knowledge is essential for creating systems designed for some of the most challenging environments humans navigate.
Shield Space focuses on developing space control and counterspace systems for NATO and allied defense clients, aiming to ensure secure access to the essential orbital infrastructure that supports both military and civilian operations.
Ritchie explained, “Modern life increasingly relies on space, and our adversaries are keenly aware of this, often exploiting any delays or uncertainties. Our goal is to empower the UK, NATO, and our allies with independent space capabilities that will allow them to operate effectively in contested scenarios. Just as air power played a crucial role in 1940, space will see its own pivotal moments.”
Molland emphasized that Shield Space aims to enhance space security while delivering significant cost savings by allowing satellites to respond in real time without needing dedicated ground teams. “Our mission is to contribute to a safer and stronger UK and assert its position as a credible space power,” he said.
