A Mother’s Fight: Remembering Rohith Vemula
In a small, modest home on the outskirts of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Radhika Vemula and her son Raja live amid memories filled with both hope and sorrow. The walls of their one-room house tell tales of struggle; damp spots and chipped paint are part of the backdrop against which the young Dalit student, Rohith Vemula, battled against the harsh realities of caste discrimination.
Rohith, a promising PhD student at the University of Hyderabad, tragically took his own life in January 2016 at the age of 26, after experiencing relentless caste-based prejudice. His death sparked outrage across Indian campuses and led to a wave of protests from Dalit students who sought justice and equity.
Radhika and Raja moved into their current home shortly after losing Rohith. They sought a fresh start but faced challenges; their landlord received pressure from others who didn’t want to rent to them. “People didn’t want any trouble,” Radhika explained, reflecting on their struggles.
The area around their home once functioned as a slum, a place filled with anonymity that allowed them to carry on their fight without being easily recognized. Raja mentioned that in that anonymity, they found a space to grieve and continue Rohith’s legacy.
Rohith was born in 1989 in Guntur, growing up in a low-income family. He was determined to excel in his studies despite facing financial hurdles that often required him to take on manual labor. With unwavering support from his mother, Rohith pursued higher education, aiming to make a difference in the world.
In college, Rohith dreamed of becoming someone significant and often sent money home to support his family. However, in mid-2015, a series of events led to his suspension along with fellow students from the Ambedkar Students Association. They were punished after clashes with opposing student groups. Rohith’s situation worsened, fueling his frustrations about discrimination and identity.
On January 17, 2016, he wrote his haunting suicide note, expressing feelings of despair over the societal structures that defined him solely by his caste. His death ignited fierce protests, leading to calls for accountability from the university and the government.
Rohith’s passing brought significant public attention to caste discrimination in India. It sparked debates and legal inquiries into the systemic issues that marginalized communities face. However, the journey for justice has been long and arduous for Rohith’s family and friends. Many who took part in the protests experienced legal troubles that impacted their careers and mental health.
Radhika, with her son Raja, has become a voice against caste discrimination ever since. They have approached the Supreme Court to draft guidelines to protect students from such injustices in educational institutions. In a recent victory, the University Grants Commission directed colleges to establish equitable opportunities and address complaints related to discrimination.
Radhika now runs a small tailoring business, and Raja juggles various jobs while writing legal petitions to continue the fight for justice. They often reflect on their struggles, with Radhika emotionally carrying the burden of her son’s legacy. She expresses her desire to continue advocating for marginalized students, aiming to prevent others from facing similar fates.
As the family prepares to mark the tenth anniversary of Rohith’s death, Radhika emphasizes the importance of remembrance and activism. “My Rohith would have wanted me to fight,” she asserts, determined to honor his memory and promote justice for those who suffer from discrimination. She remains committed, stating, “No one can stop me from going back to the place where I last saw him.”
