Supreme Court Steps Back as Madras HC Set to Rule on Jana Nayagan Release by January 20

The Supreme Court of India recently chose not to get involved in the ongoing debate over the certification and release of the movie Jana Nayagan, starring the well-known actor Vijay. This matter will now be handled by a division bench of the Madras High Court, which has been asked to come to a decision by January 20, 2026.

The film’s producers took their concerns to the Supreme Court after the Madras High Court paused a previous order that had instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to give the film a U/A certificate. This stay has put the film’s anticipated release, which was supposed to happen earlier this month, on hold.

During a hearing led by Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing KVN Productions, emphasized that the delay in certification could result in “serious injury,” pointing out that timing is crucial for movie releases and marketing efforts.

The Supreme Court, however, noted that the Madras High Court is already looking into the issue and has scheduled a follow-up hearing for January 20. Therefore, the apex court found no reason to intervene at this point. They suggested that any arguments regarding the certification should be made in front of the High Court.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and featuring actors such as Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, and Gautham Vasudev Menon, is generating a lot of buzz, especially since many believe it may be Vijay’s last film before he fully commits to a political career.

Initially, the film’s certification was recommended by the CBFC’s examining committee after the producers agreed to make some cuts. However, due to complaints about certain content, the chairperson referred the film to a revising committee, resulting in the current legal struggle.

As the filmmakers face delays and stay orders, they have postponed the film’s release and are seeking resolution in court. The Supreme Court’s recent decision means that Jana Nayagan will have to wait for the Madras High Court’s ruling next week.
