Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden faced a tough start at the ATP Finals 2024, suffering a loss in their opening match. On November 11, they went up against the Italian duo of Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori on Centre Court. The match ended in straight sets, with the Italians winning 6-2, 6-3 in just 56 minutes.
Boleli and Vavassori quickly took control of the match, breaking their opponents’ serve early on to lead 2-0 in the first set. They continued to apply pressure and managed another break, preventing Bopanna and Ebden from gaining any momentum. The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Italians breaking serve again to finish the match swiftly.
The Italian pair dominated throughout the match and didn’t give Bopanna and Ebden any chances to break their serve. They showcased strong serving skills, winning 89% of points on their first serves and 83% on their second serves. In contrast, Bopanna and Ebden faced challenges with their serves, including two double faults.
With this loss, Bopanna and Ebden have not yet scored any points in the Bob Bryan Group. Earlier in the day, the German team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz topped the group after beating Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
In singles action, there was a stunning upset as Casper Ruud defeated the highly regarded Carlos Alcaraz with scores of 6-1, 7-5. Alcaraz, who had previously clinched titles at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, struggled in the first set and, despite a stronger effort in the second, couldn’t manage to push the match to a third set.
