Vistara Takes Final Flight as Air India Merger Approaches

New Delhi: Vistara Airlines, known for its high-quality service, had an emotional farewell as its last flight completed its journey on Sunday. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia as the iconic song “Kal Ho Na Ho” played during the landing of its Goa-Bengaluru flight, marking the airline’s departure from the Indian skies just a day before its official merger with Air India on November 12.

Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, was established to enhance the travel experience in India. The merger, first announced in November 2022, aims to create a strong full-service airline that can compete in both domestic and international markets.

Challenges During the Merger

The road to merging with Air India faced several hurdles, including pilot shortages that led to flight cancellations and protests from Vistara’s crew over salary adjustments. As the final merger sign-off looms, Singapore Airlines will hold a 25.1% stake in Air India, alongside investing over ₹3,194 crores in the Tata-owned airline.

Support for Passengers Transitioning to Air India

To ensure a smooth transition for its passengers, Air India has set up extra resources at airports, including help desk kiosks. Customer support staff, easily recognizable in their branded t-shirts stating "How may I assist you?", will be on hand to assist travelers holding old Vistara tickets. Over the next few months, 270,000 Vistara customers will be shifted to Air India, and millions of loyalty program members are set to join Air India’s rewards scheme.

The newly merged entity will feature a fleet of over 200 aircraft, connecting nearly 90 cities worldwide. Air India’s ongoing upgrades include new narrowbody aircraft and enhanced services, including Vistara’s popular catering options.

Management Changes Post-Merger

Leading the transition, Vistara’s CEO Vinod Kanan will remain a key player, continuing in the role of Chief Integration Officer and joining Air India’s management committee. Other managerial changes include Deepak Rajawat taking charge as Chief Financial Officer for Air India Express and new advisory roles for various executives from Vistara.

Concerns Among Air India Pilots

As the merger wraps up, some Air India pilots have voiced concerns regarding differing retirement ages between the two airlines. Air India has a retirement age of 58 for pilots, while Vistara’s is 60. The management has yet to address this issue, creating discontent among the pilot ranks.

A Shift in the Aviation Landscape

Vistara’s exit is significant; it was one of the few full-service airlines that highlighted quality service in Indian aviation since the industry opened up to foreign investment in 2012. As Vistara makes its departure, it leaves behind a legacy of excellence and loyal customers who took to social media to share memories and bid goodbye.

IndiGo Enters the Premium Market

In light of the merger and shifting dynamics in the aviation sector, IndiGo Airlines plans to introduce a business class option on select domestic routes beginning mid-November, starting with the Delhi-Mumbai sector. This move signifies a response to the increasing demand for premium services in the Indian market.
