In a remarkable shift in American politics, Indian-Americans are making their mark this year. Following Zohran Mamdani’s historic win as the mayor of New York City, Pranita Venkatesh has now stepped into the spotlight as the youngest mayor of San Carlos, California.
Venkatesh took her oath of office on December 8, 2025, in a city with a population of about 28,000, nestled in San Mateo County and close to the bustling tech center of Silicon Valley. She is celebrated as one of the first leaders of South Asian descent in the area.
Who is Pranita Venkatesh?
Pranita Venkatesh, who comes from the Indo-Fiji community, was warmly welcomed as mayor. She was born in Fiji to Indian parents and moved to California with her family when she was just four years old. In 2009, she and her husband settled in San Carlos, where they have raised their two children for the past 15 years.
Prior to her political career, Venkatesh served as a child psychologist in East Palo Alto and worked as a buyer at Macy’s.
