Yashasvi Jaiswal: From Test Star to White-Ball Aspirant

Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a name for himself in India’s Test cricket team. However, he dreams of becoming a regular in India’s white-ball format as well. Jaiswal expressed his desire to play in major tournaments like the World Cup, while emphasizing that he is focused on improving his skills to meet his own high standards.

Since his international debut in 2023 during a Test match against the West Indies, Jaiswal’s journey in red-ball cricket has been impressive. He has become an essential member of the Test squad, especially as the team transitions from seasoned players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Although he had a short stint in the T20I team during that series, he has yet to secure a permanent spot.

Seizing Opportunities

Jaiswal was part of the Indian team that won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Despite this achievement, he hasn’t enjoyed a steady stream of matches, which means his T20I prospects are uncertain for now. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old remains hopeful about joining the Indian T20I side and dreams of participating in the T20 World Cup someday.

“My dream is to play in the T20 World Cup, but I try to focus on my game and will wait for my time,” Jaiswal mentioned during an interview with Agenda AajTak.

For now, Jaiswal may not be a top choice for white-ball cricket, but he is determined to make the most of every chance he gets. During a recent ODI series against South Africa, he faced some challenges in his first two games, but turned things around in the final match in Visakhapatnam, scoring his first century in ODIs. His performance helped India win the game by nine wickets, clinching the series.

Jaiswal is committed to learning from his experiences as he aims to secure his place in India’s limited-overs squad for the long term.

Aspirations to Lead

Jaiswal’s ambitions extend beyond just playing; he has expressed an interest in captaining the team if the opportunity arises. “Yes, if I get a chance, I would like to lead India,” he said.

While he might not be the obvious choice for captaincy in the current setup, he is eager to develop his leadership skills. Currently, roles in the Indian team are relatively clear, with Shubman Gill leading the ODI and Test teams, supported by vice-captains Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Suryakumar Yadav is the captain for T20I matches.

However, there’s an exciting possibility for Jaiswal with his IPL team, the Rajasthan Royals. With Sanju Samson moving to Chennai Super Kings, Jaiswal could emerge as a candidate for captaincy. Many successful captains, like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, began their leadership journeys in the IPL, and Jaiswal hopes to follow in their footsteps.
