Jeremy Corbyn Backs Zohran Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race
Former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, recently expelled from his party due to antisemitism claims, is lending his support to Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race. Mamdani, who aligns with progressive views and has been critical of Israel’s military actions, is running against the Democratic candidate in the upcoming election.
Corbyn expressed his endorsement on Facebook, sharing a photo of himself wearing a “North London 4 Zohran” shirt. In his post, he called for a united effort to support Mamdani, saying, “Let’s get Zohran over the finish line for a New York that’s affordable for all!” Some social media users responded with surprise and criticism, questioning Corbyn’s involvement in New York politics.
The mayoral election is just days away, and Corbyn shared a link for phone banking aimed at mobilizing voters for Mamdani. The effort is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), emphasizing the urgency of reaching out to voters before election day.
Corbyn’s history with antisemitism allegations dates back to 2020, with a report from the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission stating that the Labour Party acted unlawfully against Jewish members during his leadership. He was suspended and expelled from the Labour Party in 2024. Corbyn has since founded a new political party, “Your Party,” while continuing to deny the allegations against him.
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized Mamdani for his association with Corbyn, expressing concerns about the potential implications of having someone linked to antisemitism participating in the campaign.
In addition to facing scrutiny over his campaign affiliations, Mamdani is also dealing with claims regarding illegal campaign contributions. A watchdog group has filed referrals concerning contributions from foreign donors. However, Mamdani’s campaign asserts that any issues related to financial contributions have been addressed.
As the election draws near, Mamdani is receiving mixed reactions to his campaign strategy and alliances.
