After the World Test Championship final, veteran spinner Simon Harmer reached out to national team captain Temba Bavuma, expressing his desire to rejoin the squad. At 36, Harmer has made his mark in county cricket and often excelled in domestic competitions, yet he remained hopeful for a chance to don the Proteas jersey once again.
In a recent column for ESPNCricinfo, Bavuma shared, “Simon reached out after the Test Championship final and said he’s still available for South African cricket. It was exciting to hear that he wants to play again.” This initial contact quickly led to discussions with head coach Shukri Conrad. Just months later, Harmer found himself back on the national team, marking a return after a seven-year hiatus.
Harmer’s comeback kicked off in March 2022 in Durban against Bangladesh, where he seized seven wickets in his first Test back—a performance that highlighted the quality and control he brings to the bowling lineup. Since his return, Harmer has participated in 11 Tests, proving to be a reliable and stable presence in South Africa’s bowling unit.
