Massive Reception for MS Dhoni at New Stadium Inauguration in Madurai
Madurai erupted with excitement on Thursday as former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni arrived in the city. The cricket icon was there to inaugurate a brand-new international-standard cricket stadium, drawing hundreds of enthusiastic fans to the airport. They cheered loudly, chanting “Dhoni, Dhoni” as he made his way through the crowd, wearing his signature sunglasses and casual clothes.
Videos shared on social media captured the 44-year-old greeting the eager supporters who had lined up early to see the two-time World Cup winner.
The new stadium, named the Velammal Cricket Stadium, has been developed by the Velammal Educational Trust in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). The project, which is estimated to cost around ₹325 crore, covers 11.5 acres and currently has a seating capacity of 7,300. Plans are in place to expand it to hold 20,000 spectators in the future. The facility includes a Centre of Excellence, dedicated practice nets, advanced drainage systems, and modern floodlights—making it ready to host not just local tournaments but also high-profile matches like the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As the day of the inauguration progressed, preparations were in full swing. This new venue marks a significant step for cricket in Tamil Nadu, especially outside Chennai, as it will become the second-largest cricket stadium in the state after Chepauk.
Inside the stadium, Dhoni received a rousing welcome as fireworks lit up the sky and cheers echoed throughout the venue. Fans were thrilled to see him take a tour of the stadium in a buggy, taking in the new surroundings.
Earlier this week, Dhoni caught attention for being spotted in a Mumbai Indians jersey while playing football, showing that the cricket star continues to surprise his fans even off the field.
