Iranian President Criticizes U.S. at U.N. as Protesters Gather Outside

On September 24, 2025, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing the United States and Israel of serious aggression. As he addressed the assembly, thousands of Iranian Americans and dissidents gathered outside to protest. They expressed their frustration with the U.N. granting a platform to what they consider oppressive Iranian leaders.

Inside the U.N. hall, Pezeshkian condemned recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, labeling them as a betrayal of diplomacy and a breach of international law. He claimed that these strikes resulted in civilian deaths and argued that Iran has never aimed to develop weapons of mass destruction.

The sentiment was very different outside. Many protesters, waving Iranian flags and holding signs, insisted that Pezeshkian did not represent the Iranian populace. Mitra Samani, a former political prisoner, spoke passionately, stating, “The seat at the U.N. belongs to the people of Iran, not to those who murder and oppress.”

Samani traveled from Los Angeles to join the protest and has attended this event for three decades, vowing to be the voice for her lost friends during her time in prison. Nasser Sharif, chair of the Iranian American Community of California, mentioned that people from across the country had come together to support the Iranian Resistance and denounce the regime’s actions.

Sharif stressed the urgency for U.S. support for democratic change in Iran. He and others want increased pressure on the Iranian regime and advocate for a secular, democratic republic.

Alireza Jafarzadeh, a representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, noted the rally as a significant demonstration of support for the Iranian people’s fight against their government. He stated that a change in leadership should come from within Iran without foreign intervention.

Critics also pointed out the irony of the U.N. allowing Iran, known for its human rights abuses, to take part in discussions about human rights. Richard Goldberg from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies commented that it was disturbing to see a regime with such a record assuming a position of authority on these matters.

Pezeshkian’s arrival in New York follows escalating tensions regarding U.N. sanctions against Iran, raising questions about the country’s stability. Despite this, he returned with a message that did not gain traction at home, as observed by experts on Iran’s political situation.

While talks of diplomacy continue between the U.S. and Iran, Iranian officials have dismissed these discussions as disingenuous. They argue that it’s contradictory for America to pursue diplomatic solutions while also conducting military actions.

The U.S. envoy to the Middle East expressed a desire for a lasting resolution to the tensions with Iran, but Iranian voices remain skeptical about the sincerity of these intentions.
