UK, Canada, and Australia Embrace Palestinian Statehood in Support of Two-State Vision

New Recognition of Palestinian State by UK, Canada, and Australia

On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia officially recognized a Palestinian state, aiming to promote hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced strong opposition.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer explained that this step is intended “to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis.” In a message shared on social media, he underscored that the UK recognized Israel over 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people and that now they join over 150 nations acknowledging Palestinian statehood. He emphasized this does not mean supporting Hamas, the group responsible for the tragic attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the loss of around 1,200 lives and led to numerous abductions.

Starmer reaffirmed that Hamas, labeled as a “brutal terror organization,” should have no future or role in any Palestinian governance or security.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed this sentiment, stating that Canada is ready to partner in building a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel. Similarly, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong released a joint statement, asserting that Hamas must be excluded from any future in Palestine.

The trio’s recognition aims to build momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken by Hamas. This recognition comes amid protests from families of hostages, who have criticized these nations for recognizing Palestinian statehood.

With over 145 nations already acknowledging Palestine as a state, this move adds to growing international support. However, Netanyahu’s government firmly opposes a two-state solution at this point, arguing that such actions reward terrorism.

He mentioned that a Palestinian state will not be established on Israeli land and insisted he would discuss Israel’s response following a trip to the U.S. where he plans to meet President Donald Trump, who also disapproved of the recent recognitions. Currently, there are still around 48 hostages believed to be in Gaza, with concerns about their safety.

This situation continues to evolve as nations push for peace in a long-standing conflict.
