Bangladesh Await Sri Lanka’s Fate in Asia Cup
Bangladesh’s cricket captain, Litton Das, was somewhat reserved when asked if he would support Sri Lanka in their crucial match against Afghanistan. This match is important for Bangladesh, as their chances of reaching the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup now depend on the outcome of that game. Recently, Bangladesh managed to secure an eight-run victory over Afghanistan in a nail-biting Group B match.
After the nail-biter, Das acknowledged the team’s struggle with their finishing. Despite the performance, he remained optimistic about defending the total they set.
“The win was a relief for us, but we didn’t perform well in the last few overs,” Das mentioned, reflecting on the game.
He added, “We felt we had enough runs, but we still think we were about 15-20 runs short. Nasum and Rishad really bowled well and showed their talent.”
In this match, opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim was a standout player, making a quick 52 off just 31 balls. Saif Hassan also played a vital role, scoring 30 runs off 28 balls. Their solid opening partnership of 63 runs set a good foundation for Bangladesh. However, Afghanistan fought back, with their captain Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad each claiming two wickets, which helped slow Bangladesh’s run rate.
“Today, Tamim batted exceptionally well; that partnership at the start was key,” Das added.
In response, Afghanistan was bowled out for 146 runs, with Mustafizur Rahman picking up 3 wickets for 28 runs, while Rishad Hossain and Nasum Ahmed contributed with 2 wickets each. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer for Afghanistan, making 35 runs off 31 balls, but Azmatullah Omarzai’s quick 30 runs almost shifted the game before Bangladesh regained control.
When asked whether he would be cheering for Sri Lanka, Das replied, “I don’t know; let’s see what happens.”
The Group B situation is excitingly poised. If Sri Lanka defeats Afghanistan, both teams will advance to the Super 4s. However, if Afghanistan wins, it would lead to a three-way tie at four points, making the net run rate crucial for determining who moves forward. For Bangladesh to edge out Sri Lanka, they would need Sri Lanka to lose by about 70 runs while facing 50 fewer balls—an outcome that seems unlikely.
As they wait for the Sri Lanka-Afghanistan match, Bangladesh is aware that every decision could impact their tournament journey. With the stakes high, Das and his team can only focus on their preparations and hope for a result that keeps their Super 4 dreams alive. Their recent victory has given them a fighting spirit, but the path ahead remains uncertain.
