Birmingham Man Sentenced to Life for Mother’s Murder

A man of Indian descent has received a life sentence for the tragic murder of his mother in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Surjit Singh, aged 39, will serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over a television remote control. According to West Midlands Police, Singh confessed to committing the act against his 76-year-old mother, Mohinder Kaur, at their family home on Clarence Road in Soho.

After a call to emergency services around 1 p.m. on September 29, 2024, police arrived just moments later. Upon entering the home, they found Mohinder unresponsive on the living room floor.

Despite immediate medical attention at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, she was pronounced dead later that evening, around 11:30 p.m.

Surjit returned to the house at approximately 3 p.m. and was arrested by officers still present at the scene. While in custody, he expressed remorse, stating, “I didn’t mean to do it. I just lost my head.”

Evidence showed that Mohinder suffered injuries consistent with multiple strikes, but police have not confirmed whether a weapon was involved or detailed the underlying motivations for the attack.

Singh has pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on September 12. Detective Inspector Nick Barnes remarked on the heartbreaking nature of the incident, noting, “This senseless killing has torn apart a family, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.”
