Tencent Welcomes AI Expert from OpenAI

Tencent Holdings, a well-known company based in Shenzhen, has made headlines by hiring Yao Shunyu, a prominent artificial intelligence (AI) researcher previously at OpenAI. This recruitment represents a notable shift of talent from the U.S. AI scene to China.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Yao Shunyu is set to enhance Tencent’s AI capabilities across various platforms. His professional history includes roles at major tech firms like Google, Microsoft, and IBM, along with positions at Princeton University. Sources indicate that Tencent has offered him a compensation package exceeding 100 million yuan.

On its WeChat platform, Tencent referred to news regarding Yao’s hiring as a “rumor,” but did not elaborate which aspects were incorrect.

AI Talent Race Intensifies

This event underscores the fierce competition for AI experts globally. Companies like Meta are reportedly offering significant signing bonuses to attract top talent. Notably, in June, four researchers from OpenAI made the transition to Meta, including Shengjia Zhao and Shuchao Bi. A month later, Meta hired two more researchers, Jason Wei and Hyung Won Chung, from the same firm.

However, challenges have arisen in Meta’s Superintelligence team, with reports suggesting some new hires returned to OpenAI after only short stays. Researchers including Rishab Agarwal and Chaya Nayak are among those who have left well-paying positions at Meta.

As companies vie for skilled professionals in AI, this ‘talent war’ is shaping the future of innovation in technology.
