Protests in Nepal Lead to Prime Minister’s Resignation

New Delhi: Protests across Nepal entered their second day on Tuesday, culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The unrest was sparked when the government banned popular social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter). This decision ignited significant protests, primarily led by younger generations, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people and leaving many others injured.

What began as a crackdown on unregistered social media quickly escalated into large-scale demonstrations in major cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and others. Tensions flared outside the Parliament building, forcing police to respond with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition.

Following the violence, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday evening, a move quickly followed by Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari and Health Minister Pradip Paudel. Protesters went a step further by storming President Ram Chandra Poudel’s residence, causing significant damage.

Reports suggest that Prime Minister Oli might be considering fleeing to Dubai amid the chaos.

Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing situation in Nepal.
