Kaif Warns India Without Rohit’s Winning Formula Ahead of Asia Cup
Former Indian cricketer and now commentator, Mohammad Kaif, believes that India will feel the absence of Rohit Sharma’s successful strategies from the T20 World Cup 2024 in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. India is set to begin its title defense on September 10 against the U.A.E.
As the team gears up for its first match, Kaif noted that India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad included three all-rounders, which greatly enhanced both their batting and bowling strength. However, with just two all-rounders—Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel—available for the Asia Cup, India will have to explore new strategies to secure victories.
Kaif shared on X, “Rohit’s team was successful with three all-rounders: Axar, Jadeja, and Hardik. This gave us six solid bowling options and batting down to number eight. In this Asia Cup, with only two genuine all-rounders, India will need to find a new winning strategy. We will miss Washington Sundar.”
When announcing the Asia Cup squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that they decided to include an extra batter, Rinku Singh, rather than Sundar, who has been placed in the standby list. Agarkar noted, “Sundar is always in the conversation. We currently have two mystery spin bowlers, Varun and Kuldeep, along with Axar. If we need four spinners, he can definitely be in the lineup. But for now, we felt we needed an extra batter.”
India has previously included five spin options in their Champions Trophy 2025 squad, utilizing four of them in recent matches. As the Asia Cup approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Indian team employs its spin options in a format where spin bowling is likely to play a significant role.
