Rapid Spread of Drug-Resistant Fungus in Texas Hospitals
A concerning infection called Candida auris is making its way through hospitals in Texas, which could be dangerous for certain patients, particularly those in long-term care and those with weakened immune systems.
So far this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported over 2,800 cases of Candida auris in the United States, with about 727 of those cases occurring in Texas alone. This fungus is troubling because it is hard to treat and can easily spread in healthcare environments.
Aaliyah Thomas, an epidemiologist with the Brazos County Health District, noted that while this fungus is not a major threat to the general public, it primarily affects patients in hospitals and nursing facilities. The fungus can live on surfaces in hospitals and can be transferred through contaminated medical equipment, making it essential to follow strict cleaning procedures.
Registered Nurse Rai Janiece Robinson-Aleman highlighted the importance of thorough cleaning, stating, “I make sure to wipe down everything between patients to prevent spreading any germs or infections.”
Thomas explained how Candida auris can infect patients. “If you touch door knobs or bedside tables in hospitals, and these items are shared, the fungus can easily move from person to person and even enter the bloodstream,” she said.
Though the general public is at low risk, patients who are in hospitals for a long time are especially vulnerable. To combat this, health officials stress the need for effective training and cleaning practices among healthcare workers.
“It’s crucial to educate healthcare staff about infection control. If they can maintain proper cleaning and hygiene, we could see a drop in these infections,” Thomas emphasized.
Experts urge everyone in healthcare settings to stay alert and follow infection control measures to protect at-risk patients from this rising threat.
