FDA Approves New COVID-19 Vaccines for High-Risk Groups

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light for fall COVID-19 vaccines but only for people at high risk. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy announced this news on social media.

In his post, Kennedy shared his commitment to several key goals: ending vaccine mandates, ensuring vaccines are available for those who want them, demanding controlled trials from companies, and putting an end to the health emergency.

Kennedy stated that the FDA has authorized vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax for certain groups. Specifically, the Moderna vaccine is approved for those aged 6 months and older, the Pfizer vaccine for 5 years and up, and Novavax for those aged 12 and older. He mentioned that these vaccines can be accessed by individuals after discussions with their healthcare professionals.

High-risk groups primarily include older adults over 65 and people with conditions that may lead to severe COVID-19 illness, such as asthma, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and more.

In another significant announcement, Kennedy revealed that the emergency use authorizations for these COVID vaccines have been lifted. He emphasized that this move meets the public’s demand for science-based, safe, and sensible healthcare solutions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) previously recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for everyone aged 6 months and up. However, Kennedy’s announcement places more emphasis on making informed decisions through shared conversations between parents and doctors tailored to individual health needs.

The American Academy of Pediatrics still includes the COVID-19 vaccine in its annual schedule, while health experts stress that discussions should focus on the child’s health context and the current situation regarding COVID-19.
