Zelenskiy: Russia Pulling Out All the Stops to Block Summit with Putin

Kyiv: Tensions Rise Over Potential Putin-Zelenskiy Meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy voiced concerns on Friday that Russia is actively trying to prevent a potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated that there is currently no agenda for such a summit.

Zelenskiy has consistently advocated for face-to-face talks with Putin, believing it to be the only viable path to resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a recent press conference in Kyiv alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, he accused Russia of stalling negotiations. “The Russians are doing everything they can to prevent the meeting from taking place,” he claimed. “This meeting is essential for ending the war, but since they don’t want to end it, they will find ways to avoid it.”

Lavrov echoed the sentiment regarding the lack of a clear agenda, stating in an interview that Putin is open to discussions but needs a structured plan. His remarks suggest that Moscow will only agree to a leaders’ meeting once specific conditions are met.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed a desire to halt what he terms the “bloodbath” in Ukraine, mentioned that arrangements for a meeting between the two leaders have been initiated following his recent conversation with Putin. However, when asked about the next steps, Trump acknowledged the complexities, comparing the relationship of both leaders to “oil and vinegar.”

The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, with both sides suffering extensive military losses. The fighting continues vigorously, with assaults on energy facilities affecting both nations.

Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede territory in eastern regions while suggesting a temporary freeze in conflict areas it claims. In a change of stance, Zelenskiy has dropped his earlier demand for a lengthy ceasefire as a condition for a meeting, despite having previously stated Ukraine shouldn’t negotiate while under pressure.

On Friday, he urged fellow nations to increase pressure on Russia through renewed sanctions if Moscow remains unyielding toward peace talks.

Security Strengthening Efforts

During the joint press conference, Zelenskiy highlighted the discussions about security guarantees that Ukraine seeks from other nations. He emphasized that these guarantees should resemble NATO’s Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all.

“This is just the beginning of a large effort, and it poses challenges. The guarantees will depend on what our partners can provide, along with the strength and capabilities of the Ukrainian army,” said Zelenskiy.

Rutte affirmed that NATO allies, along with Ukraine, are collaborating to ensure security measures are substantial enough to deter any future aggression from Russia.

Key military leaders from the U.S. and several European countries have reportedly been reviewing options for providing security guarantees to Ukraine, with expectations for initial drafts to be ready next week.

Additionally, Zelenskiy mentioned that Turkey has expressed interest in contributing to Ukraine’s security, particularly in maritime safety. When questioned about the possibility of a Turkish peacekeeping mission, a defense ministry representative noted that a ceasefire would need to be established before moving forward with such plans.
