Brief

In an unrelenting display of nature’s fury, Andhra Pradesh has been drenched by torrents of rain, courtesy of a well-marked low-pressure system that has burgeoned over the Bay of Bengal. This atmospheric phenomenon, which has elegantly pirouetted from the southeast towards the west and northwest, anchored itself in the region by Tuesday morning.

The Meteorological Department has forecast a potential intensification of this weather system into a depression, hinting at further movements towards the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the southern fringes of Andhra Pradesh over the next couple of days. A vibrant cacophony of monsoon activity is expected to unfold along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, with an expansive swath of rainfall anticipated.

Rayalaseema is not to be left behind, as forecasts predict a similar weather-wrought narrative, delivering widespread rain across the region. As the skies opened up, spectacular downpours were recorded at numerous locales: Kavali in Nellore district experienced an astonishing 15 cm of rain, with Addanki in Bapatla following closely at 14 cm. Meanwhile, Kandukur (Nellore) saw 12 cm, Yanam 9 cm, and Atmakur (Nellore) accumulated 8 cm.

From the Rayalaseema region, Kodur in YSR Kadapa district reported 10 cm, while Sullurpeta and Gudur (Tirupati) registered 7 cm and 6 cm, respectively, amongst others.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued a keen warning, indicating that areas such as West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, and NTR districts are poised for heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. The forecast extends to Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Nellore, Nandyala, Annamayya, Chittoor, Tirupati, and Kurnool districts, where similar climatic tumult is anticipated.

Adding another layer of complexity, squally winds gusting up to 55 km per hour are predicted along the coastline. R. Kurmanadh, managing director of APSDMA, has implored residents to maintain vigilance and has firmly advised fishermen to steer clear of the tumultuous sea, highlighting the precariousness of the situation.
