Trump Criticizes Zelenskyy’s Stance on Land Swaps Amid Ukraine Conflict
In a press conference held on Monday, former President Donald Trump expressed his discontent with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, particularly regarding Zelenskyy’s resistance to proposed land swaps. Trump stated, “I get along with Zelenskyy, but I strongly disagree with his actions. This war should never have occurred.” He indicated that he holds Zelenskyy partially accountable for Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Trump voiced concern over Zelenskyy’s need for constitutional approval for land swaps, saying it seems inconsistent given Zelenskyy’s existing war powers. “He has approval to engage in military actions, but requires a vote for land deals,” Trump noted.
As Trump prepares for an upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he described it as a chance to gauge the possibilities for peace, saying he would quickly assess whether a deal might be achievable. “I will be telling Putin that he needs to end this war,” Trump asserted, recalling that he believes Putin would not have acted had he been re-elected in 2020.
Zelenskyy, who did not officially declare war on Russia but did enact Martial Law after the invasion, has stated that any land swap would need to be put to a national referendum, not decided independently by himself.
Trump has not detailed his specific goals for the upcoming meeting with Putin but expressed hope for a ceasefire and cooperation with European leaders. “I want to see a ceasefire soon, and we will work with President Zelensky and others to achieve success,” he added.
