The recent announcement of the 71st National Film Awards on August 1 brought joy to fans of Shah Rukh Khan as he earned his first National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan. This marks a significant milestone in his impressive 33-year career. However, the decision has sparked some debate.
Veteran actress Urvashi, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ullozhukku, expressed her concerns regarding the placement of fellow actor Vijayaraghavan in the supporting category. She questioned the criteria used to differentiate between main and supporting roles.
Speaking with Asianet News, Urvashi emphasized that Vijayaraghavan’s performance in Pookkaalam warranted more recognition than just Best Supporting Actor. She raised critical questions about how the jury reached its decision, wondering why Vijayaraghavan wasn’t considered for a more prominent role given his talent.
“Vijayaraghavan is a remarkable actor. What was the jury thinking in distinguishing between his performance and Shah Rukh Khan’s? What criteria did they use?” she asked, highlighting the need for openness in the jury’s decision-making process.
Urvashi also applauded Vijayaraghavan’s commitment in Pookkaalam, where he played a 100-year-old man. She had been approached to play his on-screen partner but declined due to the demanding makeup involved. “Even for a large sum, I wouldn’t do it. But he managed to pull it off, which deserves special recognition,” she commented.
At the awards, Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail, while Vijayaraghavan took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance alongside veteran actress K. P. A. C. Leela.
