ENG vs IND: Ballmaker to Reassess Dukes Amid Quality Worries

Duke’s Ball Under Review After Criticism in First Tests

The company behind the Duke’s cricket ball has announced a detailed examination of the match balls used during the initial three Tests between England and India. This decision comes after players and experts raised concerns about the ball’s quality, particularly its quick loss of hardness, which has been said to favor batters over bowlers.

India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, shared his disappointment following the Edgbaston Test, mentioning that the Duke’s ball softened too quickly, disrupting the balance of the game. His thoughts were shared by many others, who noted that the ball was not performing as expected in typical English conditions.

Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad also expressed his worries, highlighting a worrying decline in the ball’s quality, which used to be reliable for its shape and movement. Broad emphasized the need for immediate action, as he believed the integrity of the game was at stake.

In response to these concerns, Dilip Jajodia, the owner of British Cricket Balls Ltd, stated that they would thoroughly investigate the situation. He assured that every aspect, from the leather used to the tanning process and other materials, would be assessed carefully. “We will inspect everything and consult with our suppliers. If we find that changes are needed, we will make them,” Jajodia said.

Typically, the host nation chooses the ball for Test matches. For instance, India uses the SG ball, Australia uses Kookaburra, and England prefers the Duke’s, known for its ability to swing in seam-friendly conditions. However, that characteristic seems to have been missing in this series.

There is ongoing speculation about whether the changes in the ball were intentional to support a batting-friendly environment or if they are due to manufacturing issues. Regardless, discussions are increasing as teams and experts look for answers.

Even with the ball issues, all three Tests have led to results, making the series competitive. It remains uncertain whether any adjustments will be made before the fourth Test, but the spotlight on the Duke’s ball is expected to stay for some time.
