Moeen Ali Comments on Shubman Gill’s Approach in the Test Series

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s spirited performance during the recent Test match at Lord’s, likening Gill’s energy to that of Virat Kohli. During a chat while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League, Moeen stated that Gill’s competitive attitude is a natural part of the game.

He mentioned, “I think he’s just trying to be competitive. It’s similar to Virat Kohli’s style, and that’s perfectly okay.” However, he did suggest that Gill’s intensity might have spurred the England team to raise their game.

Moeen remarked, “What you’ve done is bring out the best in England. It’s shown their fighting spirit, and I think that’s great for the series. I don’t understand why this is being criticized.”

In the current series, Shubman Gill has been a standout player for India, scoring a century at Headingley and following up with a record-breaking double hundred in Birmingham, leading India to a convincing victory. Yet, his performance at Lord’s was less impressive, as he scored just 16 and 6 runs while getting into heated exchanges with England players Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.

Former Indian cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Mohammad Kaif also expressed that Gill’s aggressive approach might not have worked in his favor at Lord’s. Ultimately, India lost the match by 22 runs, collapsing for 170 while chasing down a target of 193, despite a strong effort from Ravindra Jadeja.

Moeen praised Jadeja’s batting, despite noting that he hasn’t taken many wickets this series. “He knows his game well. He’s been fantastic with the bat, but his bowling hasn’t resulted in the wickets he deserves,” he commented.

There have been increasing calls for Kuldeep Yadav to be included in the playing XI, and Moeen cautiously echoed this opinion, although he was unsure who to replace. “I’d like to see Kuldeep in the team, but it’s tough since Washington has been good, and Jadeja has batted well.”

Reflecting on the closely contested match at Lord’s, Moeen credited England’s calmness, particularly during the third innings, which he felt was decisive. “At Lord’s, conditions can change quickly. There are moments when batting seems easier, but then it gets challenging,” he noted.

England, after handling difficult conditions on the first morning and scoring 387 runs in their first innings, managed to gain a slight edge that helped them secure the win. Moeen pointed out, “England did well to get through the early challenging phase, and reaching 387 was impressive.”

As the series continues, the dynamics of Gill’s fiery play, England’s resilience, and India’s selection dilemmas promise to make this contest between the two teams very exciting.
