Veteran Diplomat Warns: Economic Fear, Not Climate Denial, Is Our Biggest Challenge

André Corrêa do Lago, a seasoned climate diplomat from Brazil, believes that the main obstacle to climate action isn’t a refusal to accept climate change but rather a false sense of economic limits. He shared his insights in a recent interview, stating that there’s a growing skepticism about whether we can reshape our economy to be environmentally friendly.

The Economic Barrier to Climate Progress

According to Corrêa do Lago, “We are witnessing a new kind of resistance against climate initiatives.” Instead of traditional climate denial, we now face what he calls “economic denial.” Certain industries, particularly fossil fuel companies, fear that climate policies will harm their profits, leading them to question the validity of such policies.

These entities often promote the idea that transitioning to renewable energy would be too costly, even as they continue to profit from current practices. Yet, a recent report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the UN Development Programme counters that view. It suggests that if countries can cut pollution and limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, it could actually boost economic growth, potentially increasing global GDP by up to 3% by 2050 and even 13% by 2100.

In fact, a 2024 study in the journal Nature indicates that the cost of preventing climate change is significantly lower than doing nothing at all—it could be six times cheaper.

Why Switching to Clean Energy Matters

Moving towards clean energy isn’t just beneficial for the environment; it also helps communities thrive. The shift can create jobs, spur economic development, and strengthen infrastructure against climate impacts. While initial investments are necessary, failing to act will likely lead to far greater costs, including damage to lives and property.

Fossil fuel companies are in a strong position to lead this transition. They have the resources and expertise needed to support large-scale renewable projects and other sustainable technologies. If these companies embrace green energy, achieving climate goals becomes much more feasible.

With fossil fuel stocks lagging behind in performance and green technologies gaining traction, it seems clear that the era of fossil fuels is coming to an end. Embracing a clean energy economy could yield benefits for industries, communities, and the planet alike.

Taking Action for a Healthier Climate

You can contribute to climate action in simple ways. Consider switching to energy-efficient appliances, installing solar panels, or even unplugging devices when they’re not in use. These minor changes can lead to lower energy bills and a reduced environmental footprint.

Join efforts to create a cleaner planet by staying informed and making choices that benefit both yourself and the environment.
