In the vibrant tapestry of the Bollywood landscape, one name emerges with astonishing frequency — the ever-charismatic Ajay Singh Pal. Recognized for his role as Nandu in the wildly popular anti-smoking advertisement alongside the legendary Akshay Kumar, Ajay recently engaged in an intriguing conversation with Mayank Shekhar from Mid-Day, revealing layers of his singular existence.
REVEALED: Ajay Singh Pal aka Nandu of Akshay Kumar’s popular anti-smoking ad CONFESSES that he smokes in real life occasionally over drinks
In a delightful revelation, Ajay shared that it’s the women who often recognize him more readily than men. He humorously remarked, “Men are always ensnared in the zindagi ke kashmakash,” implying that life’s relentless whirlwinds obscure his visage from their minds. This disorientation leads many to ponder if he truly is Nandu, and, if so, what on earth is he doing in Bhopal?
During this candid exchange, when posed with the question of his smoking habits, he didn’t shy away from honesty. He candidly declared, “(I smoke) Very, very occasionally, with close friends, over jaam. I will never do it in public.” What’s more, he revealed his disdain for shooting reels and the repetitive exercises that the iconic ad demands of him; the weariness of repetition hangs in his sentiments.
A memory from 2020 surfaces, when an exclusive chat with Ajay stirred the waters of curiosity. In that interview, he unveiled a lesser-known fact about his journey; a small role in Pad Man (2018) proved to be the golden ticket leading him to his advertising stint. “Out of 100, only about 20-25 recognize me as Nandu,” he reflected, stating that many believe a character like Nandu must be a prominent figure residing in Mumbai, thereby baffled to see him in Bhopal. “But even children, insightful little observers that they are, can spot me!” he chuckled, recollecting the moments of sheer surprise.
His other contributions to the cinematic sphere include appearances in notable films such as PEEPLI [Live] (2010) and Durgamati (2020), and memorable roles in television shows like ‘Shaheen’, ‘Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo’, and ‘Crime Patrol’. Each role adds a different hue to the canvas of his career.
Reflecting back on the Bollywood Hungama interview, Ajay articulated, “When Shruti Mahajan, the casting director of Pad Man, ventured to Bhopal to recruit local talent, I was summoned for a brief stint of about ten days. Initially, I was relegated to extra status in crowd shots for eight days. Then, on the ninth day, they bestowed upon me a couple of scenes with the illustrious Akshay Kumar. At first, they had their reservations about my talent; they didn’t even film a close-up of me! It was strictly Akshay’s close-ups. However, their perspective shifted once they realized my prowess, suddenly treating me with newfound respect, as if I had donned the cape of stardom.”
And that serendipitous turn of events ultimately opened doors for Ajay in the world of advertising, leading him to the platform he shares with Kumar. A journey from the shadows into the spotlight – a testament to his resolve and talent.
