Shubman Gill Talks About Support from Coach Gambhir During Record-Breaking Innings
Shubman Gill shared some valuable insights about the support he received from India’s coach, Gautam Gambhir, as he achieved a remarkable score of 269 runs against England during the second Test at Edgbaston. This innings marked the highest score for any Indian captain in Test cricket history, contributing to India’s impressive first innings total of 587 runs.
In a chat with broadcasters, Gill reflected on the challenges he faced at the start of his innings. He mentioned struggling to hit boundaries and often finding the fielders instead. During this tough phase, he reached out to Gambhir for advice. “I told him I wasn’t able to get the runs and kept finding the fielders. He encouraged me to be patient and said the runs would come,” Gill recounted.
Enhancing Technique for Success
One fascinating aspect of Gill’s performance is how he has refined his batting technique. He revealed that he began focusing on his red-ball cricket skills during the IPL season, making adjustments to his initial movements and stance to enjoy his batting more. Gill observed that he had been dismissed after scoring 30-40 runs frequently and felt the need to embrace the game better.
“After the IPL, I drilled down on my technique,” he explained. “I wanted to enjoy my batting instead of stressing over it, so I made changes to improve my performance.”
Gill acknowledged that transitioning from T20 to Test cricket was a challenging task. He knew it required a shift in mindset and began preparing during the IPL 2025 season. “Moving from T20 to a longer format is tough. I had to adjust my mindset, as the T20 style involves a more aggressive approach,” he stated.
With his recent innings, Gill has now accumulated a total of 424 runs in just three innings during the current series.
