Ravi Shastri Supports Shubman Gill’s Three-Year Captaincy Journey, Win or Lose in England

Shastri Backs Gill as Captain Despite Recent Loss to England

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has come out in support of Shubman Gill, urging the team management to keep him as captain even if India faces defeat in the current series against England. Gill took on the captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket.

The young player made a strong start, becoming the fifth Indian captain to score a century on his debut. Unfortunately, India lost the match by five wickets as England chased down a target of 371 runs in the final innings.

Despite the defeat, Shastri praised Gill for his poise and maturity. He believes that the team should commit to Gill as captain for the next three years, regardless of the series outcome. "He’s matured significantly. His interactions with the media and his confidence during press conferences show his growth. Stick with him for three years, and I believe he will deliver results," Shastri stated in an interview with Wisden.

Shastri also mentioned that Gill possesses the potential to become a great player, emphasizing the need for him to adapt to different conditions over time. "I would be disappointed if Gill doesn’t reach his full potential. His batting has a graceful elegance, and he carries himself with a regal presence. If he learns and adapts, I see great things ahead for him," Shastri added.

In light of the recent loss, some cricket experts have raised concerns about Gill’s on-field decisions. He now faces the challenge of rallying his team as they prepare for the second Test, which is set to start on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

India has struggled at this venue, having won only one out of eight matches historically. Gill’s squad will be looking to overcome this challenge and level the series in the upcoming match.
