Turkmenistan Opens Border for US Citizens Fleeing Iran
WASHINGTON: Turkmenistan has welcomed US citizens looking to escape Iran amid ongoing bombings by Israel, a US official confirmed on Tuesday.
The State Department official, who requested to remain anonymous, stated, “We’re informing all US citizens in Iran that the border with Turkmenistan is open for them to cross.”
Many Americans in Iran hold dual citizenship, and since the start of Israel’s military actions on June 13, hundreds have already left the country. With commercial flights currently not an option, most individuals have been traveling through Azerbaijan, while others have opted for routes through Armenia.
The US government has been arranging evacuation flights for its citizens in Israel. However, due to the absence of diplomatic ties, resources for evacuating Americans from Iran are limited. Turkmenistan, known for its strict governance, shares a 1,148-kilometer (713-mile) border with Iran, providing a crucial escape route for those in need.
