As of May 2024, the tapestry of the global Indian diaspora unfurls to reveal a staggering 35.42 million individuals, a blend of 15.85 million non-resident Indians (NRIs) mingling with 19.57 million people of Indian origin (PIOs), according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

This vast network of Indians abroad plays a pivotal role in bolstering India’s economy, contributing an impressive 3.5% to the nation’s GDP through their remittances. In the year that was 2023, these remittances soared to an astonishing $120 billion, nearly eclipsing Mexico’s substantial $66 billion. This remarkable growth—over 7.5% increase from the prior year—can largely be attributed to the soaring demand for skilled Indian workers, especially within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), in this context, stands out as the largest benefactor of these financial flows.

Indians, it seems, are not merely participants in the global narrative; they are trailblazers, leaving indelible marks across diverse fields, spanning science to technology, and business. Astonishingly, 24 Fortune 500 companies now have leaders of Indian origin at their helms. In the U.S., the Indian-American community propels a dynamic startup ecosystem and breathes life into small businesses, fueling economic innovation while enriching the cultural milieu.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has recently compiled a compelling list of the top ten countries enchanting the Indian diaspora:

  1. United States of America (USA): 5.4 million
  2. United Arab Emirates (UAE): 3.6 million
  3. Malaysia: 2.9 million
  4. Canada: 2.8 million
  5. Saudi Arabia: 2.4 million
  6. Myanmar: 2 million
  7. United Kingdom (UK): 1.8 million
  8. South Africa: 1.7 million
  9. Sri Lanka: 1.6 million
  10. Kuwait: 995,000

This eclectic assembly of nations exemplifies the vast and vibrant influence of the Indian diaspora, whose contributions continue to resonate within the economies and cultures of their adopted homes. The narrative of Indian diaspora is one of resilience, innovation, and unyielding connection to roots, echoing across borders and generations, forging a shared future illuminated by diversity.
