Jadeja’s Ambition: Aiming for Test Captaincy
Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has expressed his desire to captain the national Test team. In a recent chat with teammate Ravichandran Ashwin on the Kutti Stories podcast, Jadeja shared that he would embrace the opportunity if it arose.
Following the retirements of experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Test team, aiming to build a fresh leadership group. Rishabh Pant has been chosen as Gill’s vice-captain, with Jasprit Bumrah being another contender for the role, according to chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
When Ashwin asked if he would like to lead the Test side, Jadeja said he has learned from several great captains throughout his career and feels ready to take on the responsibility.
"Yes, definitely! I’ve played under many captains, which helps me understand what players want and how to support them," Jadeja remarked. He highlighted his experience with MS Dhoni, noting that Dhoni’s straightforward approach often involved placing fielders strategically to create pressure on batters.
As the last remaining player from India’s dominant squad of the mid-2010s, Jadeja’s knowledge and experience would be vital for the team. However, with growing competition for places—especially with Washington Sundar’s recent performances—his spot in the squad isn’t guaranteed.
Discussing the challenges of Test captaincy, Jadeja believes it is more manageable compared to the fast-paced nature of T20 matches. He mentioned that in Test cricket, the captain makes fewer changes to the field, focusing instead on strategic adjustments based on bowler needs.
"In Test cricket, you adjust a couple of fielders based on the bowler rather than constantly shifting for batters. It’s a more straightforward and calculated approach compared to the intense environment of T20s," Jadeja explained.
India recently announced their squad for the upcoming series in England on May 24, with Shubman Gill leading the team and Rishabh Pant serving as the vice-captain.
