Murali Karthik Discusses MS Dhoni’s Future in IPL
Murali Karthik recently shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s future, especially as the Indian Premier League (IPL) heads towards the 2026 season. The legendary Dhoni has kept fans in suspense about whether he plans to retire or return next season. Following a match against Gujarat Titans, Dhoni did not clarify his plans, leaving many wondering what lies ahead for him.
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik emphasized that while Dhoni is cherished by fans, there comes a time when even the greatest players must step aside. He mentioned that leaving at the right moment can be better than waiting until fans begin to feel that a player has overstayed.
Karthik referenced Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, noting that even when people believed he had more years left, he made the choice to depart.
"Everyone loves Dhoni, and it’s tough to see things come to an end. But eventually, it has to happen," said Karthik. "There comes a time when even those who admire you might think, ‘It’s time to go.’ With Dhoni, it’s hard to guess what he’s really thinking. He keeps his plans very close to his chest."
Future Leadership for CSK
When discussing the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Karthik suggested that Dhoni might not reclaim his captaincy once Ruturaj Gaikwad returns next season.
"The decision to make Ruturaj the captain was a part of passing the torch. I doubt that if Dhoni comes back, they would take that role away from Ruturaj," he explained.
Karthik highlighted the importance of allowing new players to find their own path rather than expecting them to fill Dhoni’s legendary shoes. "Everyone has to carve their own identity in the game. It’s essential that they learn and grow, rather than be compared to someone like Dhoni," he added.
As CSK continues to navigate their future, all eyes are on Dhoni and what decisions he will make moving forward.
