Mumbai Weather Update: What Happens to Playoff Spots if MI vs DC Gets Rained Out at Wankhede?

Mumbai Weather Poses Challenge for IPL Playoffs

Mumbai’s unpredictable weather could drastically impact the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs this Wednesday, May 21. With an 80% chance of rain, the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals, two teams struggling for the last playoff spot, may end up being called off, leading to shared points.

Both teams are currently in a tight race, with the Mumbai Indians holding 14 points from 12 matches, just ahead of the Delhi Capitals, who have 13 from the same number of games. This match was anticipated to be a key decider, but the looming rain could complicate matters.

If Wednesday’s match at Wankhede Stadium is canceled, Delhi will need to win their next game and hope that Punjab Kings defeat Mumbai in their final match. On the flip side, for Mumbai Indians, if the match is rained out, they’ll have to secure a win against Punjab Kings to guarantee their place in the playoffs. Even if Delhi manages to win their final match by a significant margin, they would still fall short of overtaking Mumbai.

Rain and Its Impact

Expect heavy rains in Mumbai, as the monsoon season arrives earlier than usual. During the day, the chance of rainfall stands at 80%, which drops to 50% by evening. It’s a race against time to prepare the field, as Wankhede Stadium’s drainage system is not as effective as that of other stadiums.

New IPL Rule for Weather Conditions

In response to the possible rain interruptions, the IPL has implemented a new rule, giving matches an additional hour. This extra time means that the new cut-off for a shortened game (5 overs per side) is now set for 11:56 PM. While this change may inconvenience fans, it aims to provide the best chance for both teams to compete.

With the weather looking shaky, the next few days will be crucial for these teams and their playoff hopes.
