Asim Munir Promoted to Field Marshal in Pakistan

The Government of Pakistan has officially promoted General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. This makes him only the second person in the history of the Pakistan Army to hold this title, following Field Marshal Ayub Khan.

Ayub Khan was the first Field Marshal, serving from 1958 to 1969. He notably promoted himself to this rank after staging a coup and becoming the President of Pakistan in 1958. In 1959, just before his retirement, he awarded himself the title, citing "persistent requests" from civil society. This decision was formalized by a proclamation from the Presidential cabinet.

Did Ayub Khan Remain Army Chief After His Promotion?

No, Ayub Khan did not serve as Chief of Army after being promoted to Field Marshal. He appointed General Musa Khan as the new Commander-in-Chief and focused instead on his presidential duties.

How Does Asim Munir’s Promotion Differ from Ayub Khan’s?

The primary distinction between the two promotions is that Asim Munir was promoted by Pakistan’s civilian government, while Ayub Khan promoted himself. Additionally, unlike Ayub Khan, Asim Munir will retain his role as Chief of Army Staff until his scheduled retirement in 2027. Recent legislation extended the tenure for military chiefs from three to five years, allowing him to serve longer.

Background of Asim Munir

General Asim Munir began his military career in the Frontier Force Regiment in 1986, graduating from the Officers Training School in Mangla. He earned the Sword of Honour during his training. Throughout his career, he has attended various military courses in countries like Japan, Malaysia, and the U.S. He has also had roles at different command levels, including leading an infantry brigade and serving as Director General of Military Intelligence. Most recently, he was the Quartermaster General at GHQ in Rawalpindi before becoming Chief of Army Staff in November 2022.

What Comes with the Rank of Field Marshal?

In both the Indian and Pakistani military structures, a Field Marshal’s rank is considered to be on the "active list" until their death. While they may not hold an official position after retirement, a Field Marshal can wear their uniform and display special badges. Tradition dictates that they salute with a Field Marshal’s baton raised to the forehead, a unique custom in military protocol.

Ayub Khan’s Military Background

Ayub Khan studied at Aligarh Muslim University in India before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in the UK. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1928 and served primarily in the Punjab Regiment. His career progressed significantly, especially during World War II, where he took command of a battalion after its previous commander was killed. After the partition of India, he rose to the rank of General and became the Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Army in 1959 before eventually becoming President.
